#12beers of Beercember Spaten Optimator Review

On the 9th day of #Beercember @NathanielSquare sold to me, One Spaten Optimator.

The Optimator is not some sort of robo beer overlord, no in fact it’s a classic German Dopplebock produced the same way for well over six hundred years. I know this not only because it’s on the label, but because Rob and I reviewed the Optimator back on happy time magic hour #24.

Back on the podcast we only rated Spaten’s brew a 3/5 because Rob is not a fan of the darker brews, and for me because i felt it had a bit of an unpleasant tobacco finish. But I am looking forward to trying it again with a more experienced pallet.

The Optimator pours a rich dark brown color, with almost no head. It smells of malt and some sweet caramel notes, perhaps some vanilla.

The taste very malty and sweet tasting but a touch of bitterness and spice in the finish.

Thankfully the tabacco flavors seems to have been a function of the batch I had over the summer or my own less experienced taste buds. However that’s not enough to increase my rating.

It’s a solid brew but there is nothing here make me want pick it up over anything else that might be hiding in a back corner of the Nathaniel Square beer fridge. It remains a 3/5 for me.

I have to say I am looking forward to rounding out this event, with the last three beers, but I am also sad that the end is in sight.

Merry Beercember to all!
